Restored concrete driveway in Jackson, TN

Why driveways look worn

Driveways take more abuse than almost any other concrete around a home. Trucks, trailers and delivery vans roll over them every day. Oil drips from vehicles. Rain runs off the roof and across the surface. Heavy clay soil below expands and contracts with wet and dry spells, which opens cracks and can lift or sink sections. Tree roots push up slabs near big oaks. Over the years, all of that adds up to a surface that is stained, cracked and dull.

What our driveway service covers

  • Deep cleaning: Hot pressure washing, degreasing oil spots, treating rust and mildew.
  • Crack repair: Routing and filling cracks with materials that suit their size and movement.
  • Joint sealing: Cleaning and sealing control and expansion joints to keep water and weeds out.
  • Resurfacing: Thin cement overlays to cover scaling, pitting and patched areas.
  • Protective coating: Penetrating or film-forming sealers to resist stains and weather.

Resurfacing a rough driveway

When the surface of a driveway is flaking, pitted or patched in several colors, a resurfacer can make it look uniform again. After cleaning and repairing cracks, we apply a polymer-modified cement overlay across the slab, then finish it with a broom texture for traction. The overlay bonds to the existing concrete and gives you a fresh, even surface at a fraction of the cost of tearing out and pouring new. We then seal it to protect the new surface.

Resurfacing works when the slab underneath is basically sound. If sections are badly broken, sunken or heaved, those areas may need to be replaced or leveled first. We will tell you during the estimate if that is the case.

Coatings that stand up to vehicles

Driveways need a finish that handles hot tires, sun, rain and the occasional fuel spill without peeling. We use penetrating sealers on most plain driveways because they protect without creating a film that can wear. On decorative or stamped driveways, a breathable film sealer brings out color. We avoid thick epoxy on exterior driveways because it can yellow in the sun and trap moisture; for that look in a garage, see our garage floor epoxy.

The garage apron

The section where the driveway meets the garage often shows the most wear. Water collects there, oil drips as cars pull in and out, and the edge can chip or crack. We pay special attention to the apron, repairing it carefully and making sure the transition to a coated garage floor is clean.

Timing and weather

Driveway work depends on dry weather and reasonable temperatures. We schedule around the forecast and plan for enough dry time before and after sealing. Most driveways are done in one to two days, with vehicles back on the surface after the sealer has cured, usually within a day or two depending on the product. Want to protect the patio and walks at the same time? Ask about our concrete sealing service.

Cost versus replacement

Tearing out and pouring a new driveway is expensive and messy, and it can take weeks to schedule. In many cases the slab under a worn surface is still strong. Cleaning, crack repair, resurfacing and sealing can give that driveway a new look for a fraction of the price, and the work is done in a couple of days. We will give you a straight answer about whether your driveway is a good candidate or whether replacement makes more sense.

Curb appeal before a sale

If you are getting ready to list a home, the driveway is one of the first things buyers see when they pull up. A clean, sealed driveway and walk make a strong first impression and photograph well for listings. We can usually fit pre-sale projects in on a short timeline.
